Dobbertin is a very pretty brick half-timbered village, dominated by its large monastery on the shore of the lake. This monastery, once enormously wealthy (25,000 hectares of property! That means all the surrounding villages, forests, fields, ...! The lift bridge was built in 1916 to replace a wooden drawbridge. In 1945, the bridge was saved from being blown up.[1] In 1991/92, it was repaired and in 2020/21, a basic overhaul was carried out, including the installation of new drive technology.[2] A remote control was also implemented, taking into account the monument protection. Until this renovation, the lock keeper, who operates the lock at the "Hühnerleiter" a few hundred meters downstream on the Elde, had to ride his bike to the bridge in order to control the bridge directly from the wooden house.
