<< Windeck Castle Ruins >> "The castle ruins, which are over 800 years old, are the landmark of Windeck in the Sieg Valley. They are located about 210 m above sea level and offer a wonderful view when the weather is clear. The formerly imposing castle complex was first mentioned in documents in 1174 as "Castrum novum in windeke" and served as a border fortress for the Counts of Berg against the Counts of Sayn. A copy of this imperial document and finds from Windeck Castle can be viewed in the Altwindeck Museum Village. Windeck Castle was first destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and finally in 1860 by the French. After that, it was not rebuilt until the restoration of the castle ruins began in 1960. << VOLPERHAUSEN CASTLE >> "The complex, first mentioned in 1462, is an impressive building in the middle of a forest. It should be mentioned here that the manor house and its outbuildings represent a place of their own; namely "Volperhausen Castle". This term means the place. After the complex was first mentioned by name in 1462, it was owned by the Counts of Hatzfeld and served as an outpost of the nearby Crottorf Castle.
