Three lockers for picnic baskets - can probably be pre-ordered from the tourism company. Cool thing! 👍

From the former location of the castle you could previously see the movements on the two trade routes Cologne-Leipzig and Cologne-Frankfurt.

The area indicates an early historical rampart. The fact that there was a burial mound nearby until 1933 speaks for Celtic settlement. No documents about the castle could be found; apparently it no longer existed around 1300. What you can see are two (?) moats. Source: Gieleroth Chronicle

It can be doubted that the RTL production “Demon Wedding” was a high point in the 800-year history of the castle. The symbol of the municipality of Windeck in the Siegtal has seen completely different things since it was first mentioned in 1174 as “Castrum novum in windeke”. The castle was destroyed several times in later centuries and threatened to deteriorate completely before the Siegkreis had the Palas wall rebuilt and the keep secured in the 1960s. Archaeological investigations uncovered a floor plan that gives an idea of the imposing dimensions of the castle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6gaSR98lRg

Windeck Castle is a hilltop castle from 1174, today only a ruin but very interesting. There are many signs to read up on the history, and from the castle you have a fabulous view of the surrounding communities.

Burg Mauel is a small moated castle in the municipality of Windeck in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a two-story greywacke quarry stone construction. Date of origin: before 1555 Castle type: Niederungsburg, mostly preserved. In 1555 Wilhelm von Etzbach was the owner of the mansion. At the beginning of the 17th century, the lords of Vellbrück took up residence here, but later leased the estate. In 1787 they sold the property to the previous tenant Peter Voß for 23,000 Bergisch thalers. In 1794, the Benedictine monks of the Brauweiler Abbey, who had fled from the French occupying forces, found lodgings near Cologne for some time. Other owners were the families Hundhausen, Kammerich, Kirchbaum and Wehner. In 1991, the Lenz / Schmid family bought the building and renovated it. In 2007, the castle changed hands and now houses conference rooms, a management consultancy and residential units. In addition, a beer garden and a wine bar invite you to take a break. Peter Voß replaced the massive gable and flattened shingled roof with a slated hipped roof. In 1841 the north entrance was closed with the drawbridge and on the south side a fixed, three-arched bridge was built. Later, a stone bridge was built on the east side. Source: Wikipedia

<< Windeck Castle Ruins >> "The castle ruins, which are over 800 years old, are the landmark of Windeck in the Sieg Valley. They are located about 210 m above sea level and offer a wonderful view when the weather is clear. The formerly imposing castle complex was first mentioned in documents in 1174 as "Castrum novum in windeke" and served as a border fortress for the Counts of Berg against the Counts of Sayn. A copy of this imperial document and finds from Windeck Castle can be viewed in the Windeck Museum Village. Windeck Castle was first destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and finally in 1860 by the French. After that, it was not rebuilt until the restoration of the castle ruins began in 1960. The castle hill and ruins are the property of the Rhein-Sieg district." https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Windeck_(Sieg)
