The moated castle was built in the 10th century as a Saxon border fortress against the Wends, presumably on the site of a Slavic hillfort in the Milde marshland. A nunnery founded under its protection, which the Obotrites destroyed in 983, existed here until 1121. The castle belonged to the four Altmark burgwarden (fortified districts), which administered the sovereign's judicial and military districts, along with Tangermünde Castle, Osterburg Castle, and Arneburg Castle. These protected the Frankish-colonized territory and the missionary monasteries between the Elbe and Milde rivers. Source: Wikipedia

Kalbe Castle is a historic moated castle first documented in 1196, but its origins likely date back to the 9th or 10th century. In 1324, it came into the possession of the von Alvensleben family, who expanded the complex into the largest castle in the Altmark region. After a devastating fire in 1584, the castle was rebuilt one last time. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was demolished in August 1632 by the residents of Kalbe and the surrounding villages on the orders of the Elector of Brandenburg. Today, only ruins remain of the once imposing complex, which is considered a prominent landmark of the town. The "Altes Wachhaus" castle and local history museum is located on the former castle grounds. It is housed in the town's oldest surviving building, dating from 1584, and offers insight into regional history.

Gardelegen's town hall is located in the center of the historic old town on the triangular town hall square. First mentioned in 1241, it originally served as a merchant's and showroom. After a devastating fire in 1526, the building was rebuilt in the late Gothic style between 1527 and 1552. In the early 20th century, the town hall underwent extensive renovations. Between 1914 and 1917, numerous alterations were carried out under the direction of architect Otto Stiehl. These included the addition of the east and west gables and the opening of the arcades. Another extensive renovation of the building took place between 1998 and 1999. The town hall consists of four connected structures: a rectangular hall building, a Hausmann tower on the northwest side, a perpendicular building on the southeast side, and a square building on the northeast side. The architectural style combines late Gothic elements with Baroque and Neo-Gothic extensions. Particularly striking is the tower with its curved dome and double-pierced lantern, which – along with St. Nicholas' Church and St. Mary's Church – dominates the city skyline. Today, the town hall serves as the seat of the city administration. However, some administrative functions have been relocated to a neighboring building on Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße.

The "Deutsches Haus" (German House) in Gardelegen is a historic half-timbered building on the town hall square, steeped in history. Originally used as an inn, it also served as the mayor's residence in earlier times. The building was built in the 17th century and reflects the region's characteristic half-timbered architecture. Over the years, the "Deutsches Haus" has undergone several transformations and has become an important meeting place for the citizens of Gardelegen. Today, it houses a restaurant known for its traditional cuisine and continues to play an important role in the town's social life. The building is a listed historic monument and is an impressive testament to the architecture and history of the Altmark region.

St. Mary's Church in Gardelegen is an outstanding example of brick Gothic architecture and serves as the town's main place of worship. The church's origins date back to around 1200, when a smaller, Romanesque church was built on this site. In the 13th century, it was expanded into a five-aisled hall church with a square west tower. After a devastating fire in 1306, the long choir was rebuilt with a five-eighths end. At the end of the 15th century, the main nave was raised and vaulted. A dramatic incident occurred on May 15, 1658, when a large section of the church tower collapsed during a service, killing 22 people. The reconstruction of the tower dragged on until 1691. The church houses several important furnishings, including a four-winged, fully gilded altarpiece from around 1430 depicting the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. Additional altars from the late 15th century and a double figure of St. Anne the Self-Proclaimed enhance the furnishings. The organ by Christoph Treutmann from 1723, restored in 2013, has 25 stops and is one of the church's outstanding musical treasures. St. Mary's Church continues to be used for services, sacraments, and concerts. Extensive renovation work was carried out between June 2022 and September 2023 to improve and preserve the church's furnishings.

St. Nicholas Church in Gardelegen was built around 1200 as a Romanesque brick basilica with a western steeple, probably on the site of an earlier wooden mission church from the Carolingian period. It was commissioned by Henry of Gardelegen, who resided in the nearby castle from 1186 to 1192. Over the centuries, the church underwent several alterations, including Gothic extensions around 1300 and additions in the early 16th century. During World War II, the church was severely damaged in a US air raid on March 15, 1945. Reconstruction was only partial, so today only the choir, the tower, and the surrounding walls remain. The church has not been used for worship since 1977, but remains an important historical landmark in Gardelegen.
