Varlar Abbey, often referred to as a monastery, was a Premonstratensian monastery founded by the Counts of Cappenberg in Münsterland. The monastery, which was converted into Varlar Castle, is part of the Varlar farming community in the Rosendahl district of Osterwick. The community there existed from about 1123/24 until secularization in 1803. After that, the monastery became the property of the Wildgrafen and Rheingrafen zu Salm, who took over a large part of the extensive church property and also became sovereign for a short time.

Nice marketplace where you have to take a break

Varlar Castle is a very beautiful castle, but cannot be clearly seen from the main entrance itself. You get a wonderful view a little further from the path branching off to the left. I didn't really understand whether this private path can be used by bike or not. However, it is used by a large number of cyclists.

We often come across that little bull in the city. The lying ox is De Os, by Jochem Pechau 1989, is a street further to the left. The Coesfeld market square is very atmospheric and attractive. No wonder, as it is framed by venerable buildings. These include the two impressive churches of St. Lamberti and the Jesuit Church. In between stands the town hall and in the middle of the square the representative fountain invites you to linger on its edge and let the square work its magic. In the many surrounding houses you will find gastronomy for every taste.

The artesian well on the border with the neighboring municipality of Heiden is not only a popular destination on hot summer days. The spring, designed as a water treading basin, brings clear water to the surface through the pressure of the groundwater and offers ideal refreshment for tired cyclists and hikers.
