The local monastery of the Augustinian Hermits was founded in 1291 by Albrecht Gailling of Illesheim-Röllinghausen. By 1523, only the prior and two monks remained, who devoted themselves to the Reformation of their brother, Martin Luther. Windsheim craftsmen built the town hall between 1713 and 1717 under the Ansbach master mason Johann Michael Aspacher and his foreman Giovanni Rigaglia.
