For the former free imperial city of Windsheim there is a first documentary reference to a settlement (called "Uuinedisheim" - Kleinwindsheim) from 741 with a church that was dedicated to St. Martin.

Over the centuries the settlement developed into a city, received its own jurisdiction at the end of the 13th century and from then on could count itself among the few cities of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation that were allowed to call themselves imperial cities.

In Franconia these were Dinkelsbühl, Rothenburg, Nuremberg, Schweinfurt, Weißenburg and Windsheim. The imperial cities were directly subordinate to the emperor and thus had their own sovereign sovereignty.
