Freiburg lies on the southwest bank of the Elbe River, approximately at river kilometer 682. Within the Stade district, the town is situated quite far north. As the crow flies, it is 27 km to Stade and 40 km to Cuxhaven. Freiburg, originally an island in the Lower Elbe River, lies in the Kehdingen region.
