The patronage of this chapel, "Annunciation of Mary" (or, alternatively, the Annunciation of Mary), refers to one of the many commemorations or feast days honoring the Mother of God. The Feast of the Annunciation to Mary (liturgical name: Annunciation of the Lord) is celebrated on March 25, exactly nine months before Christmas. It refers to the message the Angel of the Lord brought her: that she would give birth to the Son of God – Jesus Christ. According to the account in the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke, this happened in Nazareth (Israel). At the site where this happened – according to a tradition dating back around two thousand years – stands a large church, which can thus be considered the 'original patron church' for this title. There used to be a castle belonging to the Barons von Gumppenberg on the mountain. After its destruction it was not rebuilt; instead, the materials from the ruins were used in Pöttmes. Johannes Freiherr von Gumppenberg built a log cabin on the mountain after the Second World War.
