The Altdorf landmark, Altdorf The Tell monument, created by the Solothurn sculptor Richard Kissling, was inaugurated in 1895 with a magnificent celebration and its own festival. The event attracted great national interest and the Federal Council even sent a delegation of three to Altdorf. Interestingly, the year 1307 adorns the base of the Tell monument and not the legendary founding year of the Swiss Confederation, 1291. The reason: according to calculations by the Glarus historian Aegidius Tschudi, the Rütli Oath and the Apple Shooting took place in 1307. The Tell Monument (Türmli) was built in the 13th century and initially had 2 floors, but for a long time it became 4 floors. The functions of the tower changed over the centuries from private rooms, storage, to a representative watchtower with a clock. The tower was destroyed by village fires several times and was rebuilt and decorated with wall paintings. A bronze figure was inaugurated on August 28, 1895 to honor the Swiss national hero Wilhelm Tell. The year 1305 is written on the base, the date on which the Rütli oath was pronounced.
