Today the Türmli is a monument and supports the Swiss national hero William Tell, who is here as a bronze statue by Richard Kissling commemorating the apple shot. The Altdorf landmark, Altdorf The Tell monument, created by the Solothurn sculptor Richard Kissling, was inaugurated in 1895 with a magnificent celebration and its own festival. The event attracted great national interest and the Federal Council even sent a delegation of three to Altdorf. Interestingly, the year 1307 adorns the base of the Tell monument and not the legendary founding year of the Swiss Confederation, 1291. The reason: according to calculations by the Glarus historian Aegidius Tschudi, the Rütli Oath and the Apple Shooting took place in 1307. The Tell Monument (Türmli) was built in the 13th century and initially had 2 floors, but for a long time it became 4 floors. The functions of the tower changed over the centuries from private rooms, storage, to a representative watchtower with a clock. The tower was destroyed by village fires several times and was rebuilt and decorated with wall paintings. A bronze figure was inaugurated on August 28, 1895 to honor the Swiss national hero Wilhelm Tell. The year 1305 is written on the base, the date on which the Rütli oath was pronounced.

The section of the Axenstrasse from Sisikon to Flüelen always offers fantastic views of the lake. This section is currently still passable for bicycles, on cycle paths that are often separated from the car lane; the section from Brunnen to Sisikon is currently closed to bicycles!! (Bus replacement service, but only a few bikes every hour...)

In Friedrich Schiller's »Wilhelm Tell« Altdorf is "the scene of the apple shot". After William Tell refused to salute Gessler's hat on the pole, he was forced by Gessler to shoot an apple off his son's head. This is said to have happened on the market square in Altdorf, where the Tell monument, a bronze statue of Richard Kissling from Zurich, showing Tell and his son, was erected in 1895 at the foot of an old tower (Türmli).

The Tell monument is on Altdorf's town hall square, in front of the Türmli. The bronze statue of Richard Kissling was inaugurated on August 28, 1895 at the foot of an old tower. It shows the Swiss national hero with shouldered crossbow accompanied by his son Walter. On the pedestal is the traditional date of the Rütli oath, 1307. The background image on the tower comes from the artist Hans Sandreuter.
