During the early years of the County of Katzenelnbogen, the castle served as its center and gave its name to the dynasty. The protected area includes the palace with its characteristic corner towers, the enclosure on the rocky plateau, within which are also the remains of now-destroyed buildings, and the late Gothic gate tower. The former chapel was demolished in 1794.

The remains of the felled, 300-year-old oak tree can be found on the nature trail. An impressive tree, it's a shame that it had to be felled in 2006. There are many other stations, a playground, sound games, etc. to experience the forest here - interesting not only for children!

5/26/24: Unfortunately the spring is closed; the tap has been removed. The same goes for the Johannisquelle nearby. Tip: Sauerbrunnen in nearby Rückershausen. Tastes delicious!
