A nice spot to escape quickly from Odenkirchen into nature

This lourdes cave is made of special natural stone in the old monastery park.

A few narrow paths lead through the former monastery forest and this simple grotto is located on one of them.

<< Natural Monument Hohlweg am Galgenberg >> "... A ravine that was created by heavy rainfall after the Ice Age. The predominantly westerly winds blew clay and marl into our homeland and a fertile loess layer formed. This makes the monument very valuable in terms of vegetation geography. Plants that grow on the Lower Rhine almost are extinct here. Eg the black knapweed, real sheep's wings and mountain sanddrops, to name a few. A Roman road is said to have passed through this ravine in the past, from Aachen to Neuß. The gallows of Odenkirchen are said to have stood here in the Middle Ages. A person sentenced to death by the magistrate's court had the verdict read out again by the court clerk under the gallows. Then the bailiff broke a white stick and threw the pieces at the feet of the death row inmate with the words: As true as these two parts of the stick can no longer be brought together, as true you deserve the death penalty according to the law and I surrender you to the executioner in the name of the prince. (Hence the expression; over him the staff was broken.) But now the nicer side of the natural monument. There is a hiking and biking trail around this ravine, which is overgrown by the way. Since this area is the highest point of Odenkirchen, you have a fantastic all-round view and up here you can experience the sunrise and sunset.
