9月 7, 2025, View of Landshut Castle Ruins
Whether the view from the castle or from Bernkastel-Kues to the castle, both perspectives are worthwhile.

Great view across the Moselle to the castle. Landshut Castle is the ruins of a hilltop castle in Bernkastel-Kues in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district of Rhineland-Palatinate. Landshut Castle is located on the western slope of the Hunsrück above Bernkastel, a district of Bernkastel-Kues. It stands on the approximately 235 m above sea level[1] high castle hill, a northern spur of Mount Olympus (415 m above sea level).[1] The Moselle, flowing toward the castle from the southwest, turns northwest below the castle (approx. 107 m above sea level).[1] This allows travelers traveling upstream and downstream along the Moselle to see the castle on the horizon from afar. The Upper Castle and the Lower Castle rise up in the Lieser valley near Manderscheid. The Upper Castle was once a state castle of the Archbishops of Trier, while the Lower Castle, around 150 years younger, served as the residence of the Lords of Manderscheid, who lived there as representatives of the Counts of Luxembourg.

From the Niederburg via the tournament meadow to the Oberburg. There you have a view of the Niederburg. Gradweg past the Kaisertempelchen! Very beautiful! Definitely recommended to be included in a hike.

Just awesome being so close to the place and with a half day walk around and visit. For a nice stop, first check whether the castle café opposite is open; but a stop in Manderscheid is also possible.

Historically, it cannot be stated exactly who first built a castle on the ridge near Bernkastel. What is certain, however, is that Provost Adalbero was the owner of the Bernkastel Castle mentioned in 993. Boemund I ruled from 1268 to 1299. He provided large funds to provide the castle with magnificent columns, beautiful chambers, strong walls, towers and strong parapets. He wanted to help the place gain a higher reputation by obtaining city rights for Bernkastel from the then German Emperor Rudolf von Habsburg. This is how Bernkastel was raised to the status of a town in 1291. During the reign of Elector Boemund II, there is also a legend as to how today's world-famous Doctor wine got its name: thanks to the healing properties of the said wine, the Elector was able to be freed from his suffering from a serious illness, which the most expensive medicine could not overcome until now . This is how the Bernkasteler Doctor wine got its name. The famous vineyard is still the most expensive in the world. Through power, greed, hatred and war, the castle has been destroyed three times over the years, most recently in 1692 when a conflagration burned down the castle in the 17th century. It was given the name "Landshut Castle Ruins", the remains of which can still be visited today.

"The Lower Castle, first mentioned in documents in 1133, was the ancestral home of the Counts of Manderscheid. The castle, which has been uninhabited since 1794, is now owned by the Eifel Association. It has been restored and today, together with the Manderscheid Upper Castle, forms an impressive backdrop for the annual castle festival with knightly games that takes place on the last weekend in August." Opening times: March/April: 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. May to August: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., outdoor seating with food until 10 p.m. September/October: 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Costs: Entry for individual visitors: adults €2, adults with a spa card €1.50. https://www.eifel.de/go/freizeitmoeglichkeiten-detail/niederburg_manderscheid.html https://www.niederburg-manderscheid.de/

"The upper castle has been towering over the Liesertal for more than a thousand years. It is the older of the two Manderscheid castles. The castle was first mentioned in documents in 973. It sits on a mountain peak that was removed for construction, close to the current edge of the town. As can still be seen from the ruins today, it had an almost triangular outer wall and a five-story keep that has since been made accessible again. The last resident of the upper castle was "Burggretchen", as Margarethe Zirbes was called. She left the castle in the second half of the 19th century. After that, the castle stood empty. In 1921, the municipality of Manderscheid bought the upper castle for a purchase price of 1800 marks. The castle association looks back on an eventful past of the upper castle. The upper castle is freely accessible and the keep is open." https://www.eifel.info/a-oberburg-manderscheid

12月 11, 2021, Landshut Castle (Bernkastel-Kues)
High above the picturesque town of Bernkastel, the landmark stands - the ruins of Landshut Castle, on a rocky outcrop of around 60 m. The castle ruins are among the oldest buildings on the Moselle. They were built in 1276 and, according to recent discoveries, were even partly built on a 4th or 5th century castle. The castle ruins are easily accessible on foot, with the Landshut Castle Express or by car. Once at the top, the walk-in keep offers a fascinating and probably unique view of the entire Moselle valley. There is a restaurant in the interior of the castle today. If you want, you can climb the tower for €1 and enjoy the panoramic view. Source: https://www.mosel-inside.de/de/mittelmosel/bernkastel-kues/65-burg-landshut.html

A great view of Bernkastel-Kues! Personally, I would recommend hike to the castle a little earlier in the morning, it gets quite crowded here at lunchtime, especially when the weather is nice. A trip is 100% worthwhile and if you would like a minted coin, you should think of one euro and an additional 5 cents :-)
