Even a four- or five-meter-high hill, built for visitors, offers a much better overview of the landscape left behind by decades of peat extraction.

According to a 1919 contract, peat extraction, which began around 1780, was to continue until the moor had completely disappeared. However, extraction was discontinued in 2018. The gradual renaturation and rewetting of the Himmelmoor had already begun. The "Himmelmoor Friends' Association" was founded in December 2005.

The Himmelmoor, one of the most beautiful moors in the Hamburg metropolitan region, can be explored on a 3.8-kilometer-long moorland nature trail. Along the trail, there are interactive stations and information panels where you can learn fascinating facts about the moor's flora and fauna, as well as its history. From several viewing hills, visitors can enjoy impressive views of the expansive moorland landscape.

From here you have a fantastic view of the moor and its surroundings. The Himmelmoor offers a protected habitat for numerous bird species. In the wetlands you can find water birds such as coots, kingfishers, teals, marsh tits, cranes and white storks. The forests are home to black woodpeckers, middle spotted woodpeckers, eagle owls and corncrakes, among others. Migratory birds such as grey geese stop here on their journey. In addition to various dragonfly species such as the willow damselfly, smooth snakes, adders, natterjack toads and various frogs also make their home in the moor.

The Bilsbek rises in the Himmelmoor between Shirtingen and Quickborn and flows through the communities of Ellerhoop, Borstel-Hohenraden, Tornesch and Prisdorf. The Bilsbek lowland is an important natural area. There are still wet meadows and floodplains on the edge of the Bilsbek. The Bilsbek flows into the Pinnau.

The Himmelmoor is located in Quickborn and neighboring communities in the district of Pinneberg. With originally around 600 hectares of moor surface, it was the largest raised moor in Schleswig-Holstein. Until 2018, peat was still mined in the bog. (Source: Wikipedia)
