In 1372 the Archbishop of Cologne Friedrich III. the Rhine customs from Neuss to Zons. The relocation of the customs post was expressly confirmed by King Wenzel on July 6, 1376. Furthermore, in 1388 the Archbishop achieved that Duke Wilhelm von Jülich-Geldern ceded his previous rights as Vogt for Zons to the Archdiocese

The Krötschenturm is located in the northwest and is part of the Zons city wall. It was used as a fortification, watchtower, prison, dungeon, storehouse or warehouse. Apparently, during the plague waves in Zons, people who were suffering from the plague lived in the tower to keep them away from the rest of the population. This was to prevent further infections. The tower probably got its name from this difficult past. "Krötsch" means sickly.
