The academy is an educational institution with a national, non-partisan and non-denominational orientation. The castle complex, which is located on a hill, was probably built in the 12th century as a border fortification for the Fulda monastery. The moated castle of Friedewald was built in the 13th century at this strategic point, because medieval military and long-distance trade routes met here. After it was destroyed in the Seven Years' War, it lost its importance. It was only partially used. Today you can visit them and climb the thick tower. The moated castle borders the old village center in Friedewald to the south. During excavations in the castle courtyard in 1983, a shard was found in a layer of fire that was assigned to the 11th or 12th century. The first stone building, the foundations of which were found in what is now the castle courtyard, was also discovered. It is dated to the 13th or 14th century. Over the centuries the owner had changed several times. During the Thirty Years' War the castle was conquered by various occupiers. During the Seven Years' War in 1762, General Stainville (French Army) destroyed the moated castle. It was never rebuilt and the outer bailey served as an official residence and courthouse.
