The name Our Lady of the Snows refers to the following story: According to tradition, the Mother of God appeared to the Roman patrician John and his wife on the night of August 5, 358, and promised them that their wish for a son would be fulfilled if a church was built in her honor on the spot where snow lay the next morning. The couple then went to Pope Liberius, who had had the same dream. On the morning of August 5, snow lay on the highest point of the Esquiline Hill in the middle of summer.
