The castle is a former moated castle, a rectangular structure with a floor plan of approximately 15 × 20 meters, dating from the second half of the 14th century. The last owner, banker Edgar Ladenburg, was expropriated by the Nazis in 1939. In 1946, as part of the reparations process, it was returned to the heirs, the Rosewick family from Stuttgart.

For centuries, the moated castle has shaped the image and history of Taufkirchen an der Vils, an Upper Bavarian community in the eastern district of Erding. When and by whom the castle was originally built is not known. Traces of a seat of power in this place can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1263, which is therefore his "birth certificate". In May 2016, the municipality of Taufkirchen (Vils) acquired the castle, primarily with the intention of keeping the complex open to the public. The castle now houses a permanent gastronomy.
