Arnoldus de Frawnperg appears in a document from Bishop Otto of Freising in 1144. The secured line of tribes begins in 1231 with Sigfried von Frauenberg. Due to his marriage to the daughter of the Gurren of Hague, he inherited their possessions from the Counts of Hague and was given high jurisdiction over them by Emperor Frederick II in 1245. His grandchildren founded the two main lines of the Fraunbergers: Sigfried III. († 1317) the one in Hague, and Wittilo († 1281) the one in Fraunberg. Since then, Fraunberg has been owned by the von und zu Fraunberg family. Although the place was part of Bavaria, it formed a closed Hofmark, the seat of which was Altfraunberg Castle. During the Thirty Years' War, Fraunberg was looted and severely devastated. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, the municipality of Fraunberg was created with the municipal edict of 1818; the lower jurisdiction remained with the patrimonial court of Fraunberg and Riding until 1848.
