The hike started from the "Red Cross" pass. The name comes from a red sandstone cross that was built in the 19th century. This was repeatedly replaced by wooden crosses - since 1999 there has been a real stone cross here again.

The red cross marks a pass that was used by historic trade routes and was so important that the Romans built a fort to control it. The castle in Oberreifenberg later served the same function in the Middle Ages.

The restaurant hasn't been operating here since 2022—closed due to relocation. Unfortunately, it's just rotting away... It would be nice if something were happening here again...
