The story behind the Goose Fountain is as follows: As recently as the beginning of the 20th century, communal goose-herding existed in some Rhenish-Hessian towns, including Bechtolsheim. The shepherd would go from farm to farm, blowing the horn to gather the geese, sometimes several hundred of them, which he would lead out of the village into the fields and meadows to graze. The Wintersheim elevated tank was built in 1906 in the Art Nouveau style on the 231-meter-high Scheelebell hill between the towns of Wintersheim and Eimsheim. It served as the main reservoir II – the water supply for the Rhine-Selz region – with a capacity of 1,000 cubic meters. The elevated tank is considered the heart of the drinking water supply system in Rheinhessen. From here, the water flows to over 60 towns, including large-scale consumers. Only a few towns are connected via a pressure pipe or pump; most water is supplied by the natural gradient. Next to the Guntersblum pumping station, now owned by Wasserversorgung Rheinhessen GmbH (WVR), the main elevated tank was designed with great effort. The facade is decorated with sandstone blocks from the former Flonheim quarries. The architect Wilhelm Lenz, under the supervision of building officer Bruno von Boehmer, commissioned the construction of an 18-meter-high observation tower above the tank. From its balcony and viewing platform, one can enjoy a sweeping view of the Rheinhessen hills and the Rhine plain. As part of the Wintersheim Wine Hiking Day on the first Sunday in September, the WVR opens the grounds, offering visitors the opportunity to view the newest of the three existing water tanks. A tour of the elevated tank tower is not possible. In addition to the over 100-year-old elevated tank, there are other austere main elevated tanks and pumping stations belonging to the "Rhein-Selz-Gebiet Water Supply Association" and the WVR, dating from 1973 and 1996, respectively.
