On the Wisper Trail "Gladbacher Almauftrieb," you pass this spot, from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of Niedergladbach and the Catholic parish church of St. Ägidius. There's also a picnic bench here, inviting you to linger.

It spans the Ernstbach, a 12.5 km long tributary of the Wisper River, and is located where one of its most important tributaries – the Wickersheller Bach – flows into the forest. The surrounding area is part of the Hinterlandswald (Hinterland Forest), a virtually untouched, tranquil, and ecologically valuable forest landscape – ideal for nature-based hikes without paved paths. The Ernstbach and its valley are also part of this refuge for flora and fauna – a place to rest and observe.

A very beautiful old piece of history. The Mapper Schanze is the last remaining gateway through the so-called Rheingauer Gebück, a type of defensive hedge that was planted around the entire Rheingau region.
