Beautiful, cute old town of this small town

A very small chapel right down by the Saale river, somewhat hidden between the houses

The Saaltor is naturally oriented toward the Saale River. A mighty structure

St. Margaret's Church, with its striking bell tower, and Kahla's old town are situated on a 700 x 25-meter sandstone plateau where a mighty town castle stood in the Middle Ages. A special feature of the church is its late medieval four-bell chime. All bells, dating from 1415 to 1516, have survived the test of time and are preserved in their original condition. The oldest element in the church is the baptismal font, probably dating from the 12th century. The Catholic Church of St. Nicholas is located on Saalstraße, at the corner of Brückenplatz in Kahla. It is a branch church of St. Elisabeth in Gera and belongs to the deanery of Gera in the Diocese of Dresden-Meissen. As the inscription on the entrance side attests, the church, which was part of a hospital, was rebuilt in 1486. From around 1550 until the end of the 19th century, it served primarily as a chapel for the formerly neighboring "old cemetery," but also occasionally as an alternative site for the town church when renovations or repairs were necessary. The town church, with its distinctive 66-meter tower, dominates the townscape. The church's namesake is also the town's patron saint. Formerly a castle, the old town and the church now stand on a roughly 700-meter-long sandstone plateau that rises approximately 25 meters above the Saale River.

The sign here told me it was 166 m above sea level and sometimes it is so deep that the Saale spills over the banks 😅
