A great traditional pub. Outdoor seating at the front on benches and a large beer garden at the rear looking over the River Wharfe

Trollers Gill is a narrow limestone gorge in the Yorkshire Dales, near the village of Appletreewick in North Yorkshire. It has a mysterious reputation tied to local folklore. 🥾A great adventure for those who enjoy off-the-beaten-path routes and perfect introduction to Ghyll scrambling. 📜 The gorge is said to be haunted by trolls, hence its name. According to legend, it is home to a fearsome barghest—a supernatural black dog with glowing red eyes, often associated with death and misfortune. Some stories also link the ghyll to mythical goblins and other eerie creatures, adding to its reputation as a place of mystery. 🪨 The gorge is cut into limestone, featuring rocky outcrops, scree slopes, and a sometimes dry streambed. It was likely formed by glacial meltwater, carving out the dramatic landscape seen today. The ghyll can be dry for much of the year, but after heavy rain, water flows through the valley.

Very slippery as you are walking on the dry (at the time of walking) stream bed - walking pole would be useful, otherwise take care of

8月 4, 2024, Burnsall Bridge
A bridge across the river at Burnsall was in existence early by the 14th century. It was repaired in 1609 at the expense of William Craven, and again repaired in 1659, at a cost of £300. It was brought down during a flood in the summer of 1673, which destroyed many other bridges on the river. The bridge was reconstructed, with funding from a charge levied across the West Riding of Yorkshire. The bridge was again severely damaged in a flood in 1883, a reconstructed bridge opening in 1885. It has been Grade II listed since 1954. It is a much-photographed location, on a picturesque section of the river, and is crossed by the Dales Way.

A great boulder scramble when there has been heavy rainfall. If you don't fancy it then a shirt detour can be made

A beautiful river walk on the banks of the River Wharfe between the curiously named Onion Lane near Appletreewick (not sure if I expect onions and apples to mix) and Haugh Wood near Howgill. Superbly green on the banks and on the wooded slopes near the river, and with gorgeous views of Simon's Seat to the east. What's not to like?

12月 6, 2023, Bridge over Blea Gill
A nice bridge here over Blea Gill (sometimes called Blea Beck), at the foot of the wooded slopes of Bracken Haw. Definitely worth stopping here and looking at the reservoir, which is looking rather lovely from this quiet spot.

12月 6, 2023, High Shaws Laithe Thatched Barn
A historic and thatched 18th century barn right next to the reservoir, which was restored using heather from this area to make it look like what it was 150 years prior. A pretty special place.
