The Schwedenschanzen are the remains of the masses of rubble pushed forward by the icebergs of the Ice Ages. During the Thirty Years' War, these terminal moraines were used by the local population as hiding places from marauding soldiers - especially after the battle against the Swedes in Wittstock in 1636 - in order to get to safety.
