The chapel is a former Catholic pilgrimage church. During the period of German division, the Santa Clara Chapel served as a hinterland observation post and was deliberately painted bright white to fool refugees into believing they had already reached Bavarian territory.

Heinersgrün is located not far from the former inner-German border in the Dröda Dam nature reserve. The St. Clara Chapel is the burial chapel of the Knights of Heinersgrün and a former pilgrimage church. Unfortunately it is closed. Opening times are not known. The view of Heinersgrün from the chapel alone is worth a detour from the usual hiking trails.
