A peaceful spot where three mountain streams come together in the Blue Ridge Wildlife Management Area. The sound of rushing water makes it a perfect place to pause, refill your bottles, or even camp nearby. The shaded forest and cool air from the streams offer welcome relief on a long day of hiking.

Just before you hit the junction with the Appalachian Trail is a lovely overlook on a rocky outcropping. Most people stop and turn around here after enjoying one of the best views in all of the James River Face Wilderness and Thunder Ridge Wilderness. As you relax here, be aware that rattlesnakes sometimes hide in the cracks, so be careful where you sit! From here, you can either turn around and go back to your car or continue on either the AT or the Sulphur Springs Trail, and eventually to the intersection with the Balcony Falls Trail.

A large campsite with over 30 pitches and private parking. However, you have to go down a long way for water.

Springer Mountain is essentially a small rocky plateau with a few views, known for being the southern end of the Appalachian Trail. The trail from Amicalola Falls State Park is beautiful. Camping is not permitted on the summit plateau, but the Springer Mountain Shelter is just 600 feet to the north.

There are a bunch of short bridges that cross some streams in this area. This section of the Appalachian Trail is really well kept with some trailside campsites and a nearby shelter. Be ready to see other trail users while out running on this trail.

The Appalachian Trail and Benton McKaye Trail intersect here, in a beautiful section of trail that occasionally opens up to provide dramatic views of the surrounding mountains.

This is the southern end of the famed 2,135 mile Appalachian Trail, also called "The Green Tunnel". You will find a metal plaque indicating the southern terminus. You can get here by taking the 8.5 mile approach trail from Amicalola State Park.

Prepare yourself for STEEP uphill hiking for about 2 miles. There are two different viewing points once you've reached the top of this mountain. You should absolutely view both points. Wear very good hiking shoes with ankle support and a good grip. It would be a plus if they had a sturdy sole too. As said in the tip before, The views of the rolling landscapes below you are worth the whole effort. This is a strenuous hike though some people would consider this moderate. 😳
