The Porta Romana in Campagnano di Roma is one of the historic entrances to the medieval village and a symbol of its identity. Crossing it means entering a town rich in history, with charming alleys and characteristic views. Today, it is also a landmark for pilgrims and travelers along the Via Francigena, who find here one of the most fascinating stops on the route to Rome.

🌋 Stracciacappa Lake: Traces of a Volcanic Past In the heart of the Bracciano-Martignano Regional Natural Park, near Campagnano di Roma, lies the ancient basin of Stracciacappa Lake. Once similar to Lakes Bracciano and Martignano, this volcanic lake was drained in the 19th century by a canal. Today, its basin is cultivated and surrounded by pastures, yet it retains its charm intact. Watching over this peaceful landscape is the Stracciacappa Tower, an 11th-century medieval building that dominates the promontory. It's an unmissable vantage point for those who love cycling through history and nature.

Campagnano di Roma is located about 30 kilometres (19 miles) northwest of Rome.

The beautiful Sutri

The Anfiteatro Romano in Sutri is an impressive archaeological monument carved entirely out of tuff. Built between the late 2nd century B.C. and the early 1st century AD, this amphitheater represents the heart of the Sutri identity. It has an elliptical shape and could accommodate about 7000 spectators. The amphitheater is divided into three rows of seats, separated for different social classes. There are two entrances: one overlooking Via Cassia, and the other, higher up, with a covered walkway. The amphitheater was partially excavated between 1835 and 1838. There are only two other amphitheaters in the world that are completely carved into the rock, in Cagliari and Leptis Magna (Libya).

Beautiful waterfalls found on the Via Francigena between Sutri and Campagnano di Roma... it's a shame that their waters are particularly polluted.

Short climbs but for all tastes, descents not exactly for daredevils but require technique and careful attention because they are fast, especially with too dry surfaces. Safe fun.
