Good trip for hiking or cycling with some interesting history. Not to far from Stonehenge

Sarsen stones are blocks of sandstone found in large numbers in England, it is a contraction of Saracen stone, where “Saracenic” is equivalent to “pagan”. In this respect, sarsen means something like “heathen stone”, “stone of the heathen”. The most famous sarsen stones can be found here in Stonehenge.

he parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul was founded in the late 11th century. It was given to Salisbury Cathedral c.1115 by Henry I to form part of a living. The value of this church was soon increased by other gifts of property, and within a few years there were canons at Heytesbury. By c.1160 it was established as a collegiate church with a dean and four prebendaries, two each of priests and deacons. A collegiate church was effectively a 'mother church' with resident priests whose task it was to go out into the wider community as missionaries, with the aim of encouraging new 'daughter churches'. There's a small cafe just inside the main gate - you can bring your bike in and prop it up on the slope opposite the cafe and purchase some refreshments (without paying the full entry price). There are toilets in the car park too, which might be useful!

We first considered whether we should save the entrance fee and use the outer path. However, we were not so sure about the parking situation from the northern entrance, which is why we decided to pay the entrance fee and took the bus from the visitor center to the bus stop right in front of the stones. We were a lot closer to it, especially on the south and west side, than the path of the non-payers, which leads past the stones at a greater distance. Since we will probably not have this chance again to look at the stones up close, we have not regretted the entry. By the way, cheaper with National Trust!
