Perfect views when the sun is out.

Using the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention of the human spirit of discovery, the origins of which can be traced back to times long past. Thanks to such a construction, a watercourse - natural or artificial - could simply replace human or animal muscle power with the power of the natural elements, for example to grind grain into corn or to press oil from fruit. There are essentially two different ways of driving watermills: * Either the flowing water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or * the water is guided - usually through a so-called "mill channel" - above the wheel and falls onto the blades; this type of construction is more efficient due to natural gravity.

In addition to the main rail bridge spanning the river, smaller bridges were built to allow traffic and pedestrians to cross the cuttings and track as it travelled north-west. Three bridges were built for this purpose and all of them remain integral to the navigation of the town today. Arguably the most distinctive of them is the Alexandra Street pedestrian footbridge, above the site of the dismantled station. Constructed from iron and now partially supported by four narrow legs, the bridge stands at what was once the northern end of the station, where the single-line section to Templecombe began. Blandford station remained open until 7 March 1966, when the entire line from Bath to Bournemouth closed to passengers. Goods traffic continued for a further three years, but the station was finally closed and the track lifted in 1969. Following the closure, the Damory railway bridges, on the southern approach to the station, were eventually demolished in 1978.

The hill is now a National Nature Reserve (NNR) with common plants including milkwort, salad burnet, horseshoe vetch, squinancywort, pyramidal orchid and wild thyme. Rarer species include bastard toadflax, meadow saxifrage, early gentian and dwarf sedge. Butterflies include dingy skipper, grizzled skipper, chalkhill blue and Adonis blue. In August 2014, Hambledon Hill fort was acquired by the National Trust for £450,000. The money to buy the hill had come from a Natural England grant and a legacy gift left to benefit Dorset countryside. The hillfort is a Scheduled Monument, as is the adjacent Neolithic causewayed camp.

If you come on a wet day..... like I did, be super careful on the declines.... the grass is so slippy, and it's easy to take a little tumble n slide.

Opened in 1997, Preetz Bridge was the first pedestrian bridge built to cross the River Stour. To the west, you can see two arches that are the last remains of the old railway line of this town.

This former mill is now a building of apartments. If you run by here, you'll see a weir, a bridge, and a large millpond.

Now only two spans remain and are preserved by the Blandford Railway Arches Trust. The railway bridge was built by the Somerset and Dorset Railway around 1880 and was demolished after the line closed in 1966 as part of the Beeching cuts.

Hambledon Hill was an Iron Age hill fort with great views across the surrounding lower lying countryside. Today the area is managed by the National Trust to preserve the ancient earth works and maintain this important habitat. The sunny chalk grassland supports at least 28 species of butterfly and many rare plants. The running along or around the hill is fun, underfoot it's grippy and forgiving allowing fast descents.

A very impressive Iron Age hill fort.

One of two-foot bridges across the River Stour in these meadows. The views up and down stream are nice and if you're very lucky you may spot an otter here. The two arches of an old railway bridge are visible to the west. This is the last remains of the old railway line that served Blandford Forum. The line was closed in 1966 and most of the bridge demolished, it's not clear why this bit remains.

A five-acre island surrounded by the River Stour with a campsite, old mill buildings, mill pool and peaceful stretch of the river.

Amazing views over the Stour and Lwerne valleys, as well as Blackmore Vale and the Fontmell & Melbury Downs. Well worth a hike and picnic on a sunny day. You can even ride your bike up when dry.

Thinking …bike would be best. Going to try biking on the TRAILWAY. Need to go further !

Great place to stop by the river

Mild gravel off road ex railway track from Sturminster Newton to Blandford. Road traffic free.

This former mill occupies a particularly lovely spot on the River Stour. Now converted into apartments, you'll find a weir, a bridge and a large millpond here. The Jubilee Trail, a long-distance footpath, passes right by and takes you over the footpath to cross the river.
