All Saints Church in Hilton, Dorset, is a remarkable Grade I listed building, primarily dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its unique architecture features masonry, windows, and carved corbels (including a bagpipe player) salvaged and reused from the nearby Milton Abbey after the Dissolution. The church also houses two beautiful panels of early 16th-century paintings of the Apostles, which were also transferred from the Abbey. It retains a square 12th-century font in Purbeck marble.

The chapel dates back to the late Norman period, around 1190, making it the oldest building within the Milton Abbas complex. It was built by the monks of Milton Abbey as a pilgrim chapel.

Lovely pretty 14th century church definitely worth a visit

Not always great! The field had been recently ploughed so picking out the bridleway was difficult and it was strewn with large rocks and I often had to walk to cross deep furrows.

In a clearing in the forest, you will come across this chapel, built in the late 12th century in a Norman style. In autumn, it creates a picturesque scene with the colorful trees that surround it. Perfect to take a break in the route.

The All Saints Church in Hilton stands as a parish church within the Dorset countryside. Erected during the 15th century, the church underwent a meticulous restoration by the Victorians in 1890. Within its walls, a glimpse of medieval artistry is preserved – paintings depicting the ten Apostles. These compelling creations were initially integral components of a grand screen at Milton Abbey. However, in 1774, they were carefully detached for restoration purposes and eventually found a new home within the confines of this venerable church.

There's a car park and viewpoint at the top. Coming from the east is a long gradual climb. Coming from the west it is a short, sharp climb hitting 15% in places. But…going down (especially eastwards) makes it worth it.

Difficult climb on a bikepacking rig but good scenery.
