The Preaching Pit is a long disused quarry on Tregonning Hill. This is said to have been the place where clergymen once preached to the miners of Breage and Germoe. For over a hundred years, Methodists, initially from Ashton but later from Balweset, gathered in the Preaching Pit on Pentecost Sunday for their Sunday School celebrations. Today, Christians from many denominations gather here on Pentecost for an ecumenical service.
