This ecclesiastical fortress was built in the opposite part of the city in relation to the Basilica of Santa María de los Reyes, attached to the wall and completing the southeastern end of the fortified area of Laguardia. Its current appearance is the result of successive interventions, expansions and reforms dating back from the end of the 12th century to practically the middle of the 18th century.

The medieval town of Laguardia, which is worth seeing, is located in the famous wine region of Rioja Alavesa on the left bank of the River Ebro. The old town, surrounded by city walls, is one of the most beautiful in the southern Basque Country
