This church is located next to the city walls and, together with the church of San Juan Bautista, formed the fortified area that protected the medieval town.

The lagoon is completely dried out and overgrown, and seems to have been that way for some time.

This ecclesiastical fortress was built in the opposite part of the city in relation to the Basilica of Santa María de los Reyes, attached to the wall and completing the southeastern end of the fortified area of Laguardia. Its current appearance is the result of successive interventions, expansions and reforms dating back from the end of the 12th century to practically the middle of the 18th century.

In the set of wetlands of Laguardia is the Prao de la Paul Lagoon, one of the four lagoons that make up this ecosystem. Surrounded by vineyards, this artificial lagoon has recently been drained to prevent the spread of invasive species, but it remains an important breeding ground for various birds. The wetland has a bird observatory.

I recommend taking a photo that combines the Fuenmayor sign with the Church in the background. Visiting it inside is also an unforgettable experience.

El Ciego is an exemplary municipality in the province of Logroño as it is surrounded by cultivated vineyards and a set of wine cellars. Surrounding it are the fields of vineyards that offer a landscape archetype typical of this area.
