The Saint Leo Chapel was built in the Romanesque Revival style on the site where the keep once stood. It was consecrated in 1894 and dedicated to Saint Leo. Inside, Martin painted medallions on the vault in the 11th-century style, depicting seven scenes from the life of Saint Leo. The windows, dating from 1895, depict the saints of Alsace, many of whom were members of the Counts of Eguisheim.

This picturesque wine village is built in concentric circles around a medieval castle. You can walk or cycle here between colorful half-timbered houses, flower boxes and wine cellars. Eguisheim was not only voted one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”, but also the favorite city of the French in 2013.

Welcome to Eguisheim, the village where the houses are so photogenic they’re probably taking selfies when you’re not looking. Everything here looks like it was designed by an interior designer with a flower addiction and a passion for pastels. The streets wind in circles, so if you’re thinking, “I’ve been here before,” you’re right – you’ve just landed on an architectural merry-go-round. Perfect for those who love half-timbered houses, wine, and getting lost in the most charming way possible.

The so-called “palace of the lords of Eguisheim” refers to the original castle of Eguisheim, which was built in the 8th century by Eberhard, Duke of Alsace and nephew of Saint Odilia 1. This castle formed the centre of the village and gave rise to the unique concentric urban structure of Eguisheim, with the houses and streets built in circles around the castle. Although the original castle has largely disappeared, its remains are integrated into the Chapelle Saint-Léon, which was built on the site of the old keep. This chapel and the surrounding Place du Château Saint-Léon today form the symbolic heart of the village. Here you will also find the statue of Pope Leo IX, who was born in this castle in 1002.

What makes Eguisheim special is that these half-timbered houses are built in concentric circles around the former castle of the Counts of Eguisheim. This creates a unique street pattern that invites visitors to wander around the village in circles. The houses are often painted in bright colours and richly decorated with flowers, wooden shutters and wrought iron signs. Each house seems to tell its own story, and together they form a harmonious whole that gives Eguisheim its fairytale appearance.

Many wineries are built in a typical way. Characteristically, the ground floor was built in stone to support the timber frame construction. The half-timbering was sober until the 16th century and the woodwork is protected by soot or red iron oxide. Pigments and colors on the facades are priceless, which is why clay or whitewash is used. In the 17th century, the windows become larger, wooden decorations embellish the facades and pastel colors are used by the very wealthy. In the 19th and 20th century, a building is completely provided with a layer of cement. But for several decades now, woodwork of a house has become visible again. With the arrival of paint and its wide color palette, the Alsace region takes on a cheerful note... Her new identity is colorful 🌈

Three castles nested together... these are the Drei Exen, whose keep, visible from afar, adorns the ridge to the west of Eguisheim. Well worth seeing and also very busy (the nearby car park makes it easy)

The picturesque half-timbered houses in Eguisheim line the narrow ring road of the Rue du Rempart Sud. Where the two ring streets of Rue du Rempart Sud and Rue de l'Allemend Sud meet is one of the well-known photo motifs of Eguisheim, a small half-timbered house, framed by the streets and the houses on the right and left. Picturesque, but usually well attended.

The oldest castle 'Wahlenbourg' of Les Trois Châteaux consists of a square keep. It was built in the 12th century and a residence from the 13th and 14th centuries. Unfortunately, the oldest castle does not reveal its secrets. Access to the fortress tower is closed for security reasons. Enjoy the steps you take in the past. Don't forget to look up to the past.

Chapel was not accessible during our visit. We were able to meet Bruno van Eguisheim on the pleasant square. It is in the center of the fountain's framework. He was made pope in 1049 under the name Leo IX and is better known as the traveling pope. Conciliatory, he traveled through medieval Europe for the restoration of the Church.

The city of Eguisheim is unique because of its shape. It is circular. A double fortification was built according to two ovals. The square did not so much have a military vocation, but rather played a leading economic and financial role, while sheltering numerous and wealthy tithe courts. Agricultural buildings are placed between the old walls and a second ring road is constructed: the "Allmend". After the major conflicts, from the 16th century onwards, the outer bailey was lowered to accommodate cottages that were built for support. If you follow the road, you will pass here again without noticing that Eguisheim takes you into its circle. ...
