This is undoubtedly the best way to climb the Grand Ballon. It's the only hors catégorie climb in Alsace, with a 12.8-kilometer (8.0 miles) average gradient of 7.5% and a superb cycle path paved in 2023 between Geishouse and the Haag Pass.

A treat from the Thann Valley. Beautiful asphalt, a clear view of the Grand Balloon 🎈 in the first bends and accessible percentages. Perfect !

We, the Kemnather Land team, also tortured ourselves like crazy ;-) on our 4-day tour to Lörrach. It was nice!

The approach from Bitschwiller-lès-Thann has an elevation gain of 400 meters over 6.2 kilometers. A maximum gradient of 13%. But it is relatively uneven, so it is not that easy to ride.

If you are looking for a quiet and challenging variant for the ascent to the Grand Ballon, you will find the only sensible option here. From Saint-Amarin up to Geishouse is already a hefty climb. Then take a deep breath at Geishouse and possibly fill the bidon. Then it goes on through the forest and relatively steeply up. At the end you only have to share the Rout des Crêtes with the motorized traffic for a very short time, but by then the grin should be big enough that it doesn't bother you too much!
