The town of Châtenois, with approximately 4,300 inhabitants, is located in the Grand Est region and belongs to the Bas-Rhin department, Sélestat-Erstein arrondissement. The Rothenbachkopf in the High Vosges Mountains lies a few meters east of the Route des Crêtes (D430) between the Batteriekopf and the Col de la Schlucht in the Haut-Rhin department.
