The Rhine island lies between Hartheim on the German side and Fessenheim on the French side. The Old Rhine borders the island's eastern shore, which faces the German side, and the Grand Canal d’Alsace on the western shore, which faces the French side. The narrow, approximately 1 km long stretch of road sees little traffic and is rather atypical for the area, yet quite charming. This so-called dry floodplain was formed by erosion following the straightening of the Rhine by the civil engineer Tulla. It provides habitat for a number of rare to very rare plant and animal species. The Waldshut and Wiesental area, based on what I've seen of the Southern Black Forest so far, is among the more charming parts. Unlike the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald or Schwarzwald-Baar districts with their gentler silhouettes and open landscapes, this area is wilder and more spectacular. Rugged cliffs and narrow, winding roads along steep precipices sometimes evoke memories of Spain, southern France, or Italy. The trade-off, however, is more extreme elevation changes that need to be addressed along the way, requiring better fitness and being more strenuous. Nevertheless, anyone who hasn't yet explored this region is missing out. Just my two cents. And what does the community think?

(4/2024) The castle is now empty and the rooms are gradually being given over to social projects by the city. The former castle or monastery garden was transformed by the city's citizens into a very beautiful community vegetable/ornamental garden. You can now drink coffee in the Villa Artis house next to the Villa Urbana Roman Museum.

The lock between Kembs and Niffer, which has been a listed building since 2005, was designed by the architect Le Corbusier and ensured the connection between the Rhine-Rhone Canal for the last section to Huningue. Since the extension of this section to the Rhine side canal, a new lock 500m further north has taken over this function. Beautiful castle with many buildings and open spaces. The entire complex is an impressive size. Of course with an interesting history, but the present is also exciting and almost resembles a crime thriller or Asterix: In 2019, a private international boarding school was to be built there by a Chinese investor. After strong resistance from citizens, the local council decided at the end of 2021 to make the castle city property. Public and social use is planned, the details of which are yet to be determined.
