Many centuries ago, our ancestors discovered the possibility of harnessing the power of the elements—which, on the one hand, were helpful and useful, but on the other hand, as untamed forces of nature, could also be a threat—for various purposes, thus eliminating the need for human or animal muscle power. Mills such as these are a good example of the human engineering skills of earlier generations: The heavy millstones used to grind grain or press oil, for example, could be powered by wind or—as in this case—water.

The name of this village is of Flemish origin. Zuyt means "south" in old Dutch and the peene is a small river that passes through the village. This Flemish village adjoins that of Noordpeene (to the North), in the valley where the famous battle of the Peene took place in 1677. The church of Zuytpeene, dedicated to Saint-Vaast like many churches in the region, is quite large for a village church. It was built at the end of the 19th century, replacing the old Romanesque church ravaged by a fire in 1886.

The church was built in a 16th-century Gothic style, characterised by high vaults, pointed-arch windows and detailed brickwork. The sturdy stone construction reflects the building traditions of the time and offers an impressive sight. A striking feature is the massive bell tower with its characteristic square base and octagonal superstructure. Inside, you will find a wealth of religious art and historical artefacts. The stained-glass windows tell biblical stories and scenes from the life of Saint Vaast, while the wooden pulpit and altar bear witness to the craftsmanship of a bygone era.
