The refuge is located in the hollow of an alpine pasture in the upper Lavey valley. Its typical style recalls the pastoral heritage of these mountains. It has 44 beds divided into three dormitories and offers a catering service. Remember to book to put all the chances on your side to have a good time here.

La Bérarde was almost completely destroyed by the Vénéon flood in June 2024. It is not clear whether it can be rebuilt because a similar event could possibly occur again. Access is closed to non-residents (as of September 2024).

La Bérarde from Les Clapiers is 27.3 km long with a total drop of 964 m. The average gradient is 3.53% with maximum gradients of 11%. The climb takes you into the heart of the Ecrins massif and it is a road with little traffic. The views along the climb are breathtaking and you can even hear the sound of marmots during the summer months.

The climb to the hut is a bit strenuous, but the view from the terrace is stunning: a wide view of the mountains, valleys and (still remaining) glaciers in the heart of the Ecrins. The very inconspicuous architecture of the building, which looks almost like a stable on the outside, serves as avalanche protection. The hut was renovated in 2017/18 and is now a friendly and highly functional accommodation inside. In summer it is open and offers cuisine with organic products from the region, exemplary. Starting point for high-altitude tours in the peaks around Barre des Ecrins. https://www.temple-ecrins.com/ Update June 2024: due to the storm disaster in the Vénéon valley, access is currently impossible and the hut is closed.
