The town was called Saint-Léger-en-Morvan, then Saint-Léger-de-Foucheret, before adding in 1867 the name of Marshal Vauban who was born in this place in 1633. Saint-Léger was given by the Bishop of Autun in 974 to the Abbey of Vézelay, then in the 12th century to the Abbey of Reigny. The church, under the name of Saint-Léger, is built on a terrace overlooking a small valley; with a cruciform plan, it includes a nave, a projecting transept and a choir with a flat chevet.

The second part of the village's name comes from the large number of empty stone tombs placed in the cemetery surrounding the church. The church is the central location of the village, next to the mayor and not far from a mini-market and a few shops.

Quarré-les-Tombes is located in the regional natural park of Morvan. It takes its name from the 7th and 10th century sarcophagi found on the north-west facade of the village church.

The moated castle of Époisses was built in the 14th century as a castle with an irregular hexagonal layout. The living quarters are located between the seven rectangular towers. Worth seeing is the pigeon tower in the castle park with niches for 3200 pigeons. If you cross the moat and enter the castle through the gate, you have the opportunity to visit the very beautiful and well-kept castle garden for 2 euros. A leaflet (French, English, German and Dutch) guides you through the facility with explanations. The private rooms can only be visited as part of a guided tour (currently 9 euros) at set times.
