「Spade」という用語は、ノルマンディー上陸作戦（1944年6月6日）の5つの主要セクターの1つであるソードビーチ（Sword Beach）を指します。イギリス軍とフランスコマンドに割り当てられ、連合軍の東側側面を保護し、カーン市を解放するための重要な作戦の舞台となりました。

上陸に特化した主要なセンターは、サン＝ローラン＝シュル＝メール（フランス）にあるオマハ・ビーチ記念博物館（Musée Mémorial d'Omaha Beach）です。海岸からわずか200メートルの場所にあり、オリジナルの遺物、車両、制服を展示し、ドキュメンタリーを上映しています。近くには、10,000点以上の遺物と40台の装甲車両を収蔵するオーバーロード博物館（Overlord Museum）があります。

Particularly famous is the modern steel sculpture "Les Braves," which consists of three parts: "The Wings of Hope," "Rise, Freedom!", and "The Wings of Fraternity." They symbolize hope, freedom, and fraternity—the core values of the Allied mission.
