Cheffontaines and the francization of the Breton name Penfeunteunio. This family took off in the 18th century, when the barony was elevated to a marquisate and admitted to the honors of the Versailles court: it was at this time that Marquis Jonathas Hyacinthe de Cheffontaines had the castle built.
