Doberan Monastery was founded in Bad Doberan as a former Cistercian abbey. It developed into an important spiritual, political, and economic center in Mecklenburg. The village of Parkentin's striking church tower greets visitors from afar. June 4, 1184, was the day the first church was consecrated. The church is an architecturally perfect and artfully designed, well-preserved building. It is one of the most beautiful in the entire region. The 15th-century wall and vault paintings, long painted over, were rediscovered and exposed in 1899, but some have been extensively restored. The altar, with parts dating back to the 15th century, a crucifixion group from the 14th and 17th centuries, a limestone font from the 13th century, and the pulpit from 1615 are other significant treasures of this village church. After extensive renovation, the complex is still in use today.
