On the route from St. Dionys to Brietlingen, this bridge crosses the Neetze Canal. From here, you have a beautiful view of the waterway.

This is a great place to park your car for a hike through the St. Dionysian Forest.

The "Nedderste Molen" (Lowest Mill) is an essential part of Lüneburg's water district. It was owned by the Welf Duke Henry the Lion, who donated the mill to the then abbot of St. Michael's Monastery in 1147. The monastery itself operated the mill for about 200 years. An old document records that it was granted as a fief to the Lüneburg council family van der Molen from 1366 onward. Ownership and operation changed hands several times until the early 19th century, at times jointly with the Lüner Mill on the other side of the Ilmenau River. In 1995, the "Abts- und Lüner Mühle GmbH" ceased operations, and the entire complex was purchased by a neighboring hotel operator, completely restored, and converted into a hotel. The water tower, with its romantic suites, is particularly popular. Source: https://www.lustauflueneburg.de/abtsm%C3%BChle/#gsc.tab=0

The Ilmenau's flow is very fast, so it doesn't freeze in winters when even the Elbe freezes. In southern Lüneburg, in the Tiergarten area, on the right "steep bank" overlooking the floodplain meadows, you'll find a large boulder bearing the inscription "Loreley." Heinrich Heine is said to have written his "Loreley" here in 1823, overlooking the Ilmenau. A few meters further on, the Ilmenau originally split into two branches and encloses an island, which was probably the main reason why the first settlers settled at this particular spot and founded the village of "Modestorpe." Here, people could cross the river more easily. Over the centuries, the eastern branch was slightly rerouted, dammed, and called the Lösegraben. It flows back into the Ilmenau at the level of the Hude, in front of the Bardowick Gate. The Lösegraben is a diversion ditch for the Ilmenau when it carries too much water. Every year in October, the Ilmenau River is drained for about a week. The incoming water is then completely diverted through the Lösegraben (Lose Trench). The riverbed itself then dries out between the fork and the reunion. The connections are checked and the riverbed is cleaned up, usually revealing a lot of garbage. At the same time, the owners of the Abtsmühle (Abbot's Mill), the Ratsmühle (Rats Mill), and the Lüner Mühle (Lüner Mill) repair their hydroelectric power plants. A towboat is a historical means of transport pulled along a river by people or animals. In Lüneburg, there is an old towpath along the Ilmenau River that commemorates this tradition. This path was once used to pull ships upstream before motorized vessels took over. Source: KI
