Those who do the Franz-Josef Glacier correctly do not go directly to the glacier but follow the Alex Knob Trail. From there you can see everything.

An amazing view across the valley and to Aoraki. Quite challenging, but totally worth it. My phone sadly didn't gather any height information, but just consider the track to be one long flight of stairs. It's useful to check the weather beforehand. We got a good information about it by calling the visitor center.
