Montespluga SO The mountain village of Montespluga is located at an altitude of 1908 m above sea level at the beginning of the Val San Giacomo (also called Valle Spluga) about three kilometers from the top of the Splügen Pass. The village was built in a depression rich in water and pastures where the Valle Spluga meets the Val Loga, near the border peaks of the area such as the Pizzo Tambo. In 1927, with the construction of the dam wall located about 2 kilometers south of Montespluga, the Torrente Liro was dammed to form the Lago di Montespluga below the village. The village with the few houses, restaurants, hotels and shops on the pass road and the old customs building "La Casa" has hardly changed. Until 1841, the only hospice on the Splügen Pass and the only place of worship, the Chapel of San Francesco d'Assisi, were located here. The latter was consecrated in 1832 after the completion of the new road to the Splügen Pass in 1822. As early as 1767, the apostolic nuncio in Switzerland and later cardinal Luigi Valenti Gonzaga had given permission to set up a small chapel in the hospice. Since the opening of the San Bernardino Tunnel, the pass has no longer been kept open in winter. The village, which consists of three roads (Via Dogana, Via Ferrè and Via Val Loga), can be cut off from both Italy and Switzerland. Montespluga is the starting point for numerous hiking, mountaineering and ski touring destinations in the surrounding mountains and a stop on the cross-border long-distance hiking trail Via Spluga. In the small town of Montespluga, where, despite being 1900 meters above sea level, we feel the first breath of Italy and the South, the only hospice and the only church (the chapel of San Francesco d'Assisi, replaced in 1825 from a new construction) of the locality were located until 1841 at Passo dello Spluga. Today Montespluga, thanks to its accommodation facilities and restaurants, is, both in summer and in winter, a small and welcoming tourist resort with an unmistakable atmosphere.

The ascent to both lakes is varied and manageable for experienced hikers. After the tree line follows a mixture of rocky landscape and small mountainous climbs. A very good day hike if you start early, otherwise a relaxed two-day tour with a tent.

The Piz Tambo is a square, elegant, magnificent and shapely summit pyramid and it is the highest peak in the long chain between the Misox (The Misox, Italian Val or Valle Mesolcina is a valley in the Swiss canton of Graubünden.) And the Italian Valle San Giacomo also, because apart from the Rheinwaldhorn (Adula) in the west no other summit comes close to it. Swisstopo national maps.

Surefootedness, fitness and good footwear are basic requirements for this tour. Plan around 5 hours to enjoy the landscape, a break in the enoteca in Montespluga and the tricky passages in the boulders / scree slopes.

various restaurants invite you to strengthen. The bottom of the lake has a reasonable price compared to the ones on the street (which are not bad either)

Just 300 meters from the Swiss border, the clocks tick quite differently – in Montespluga. This small Italian town has always been a stopover and transit point. It's all the more interesting to linger here for a cappuccino (or two) and people-watch. You can sit casually by the street with a view of the impressive mountain peaks.
