St. Margaret's Church, with its striking bell tower, and Kahla's old town are situated on a 700 x 25-meter sandstone plateau where a mighty town castle stood in the Middle Ages. A special feature of the church is its late medieval four-bell chime. All bells, dating from 1415 to 1516, have survived the test of time and are preserved in their original condition. The oldest element in the church is the baptismal font, probably dating from the 12th century. A Renaissance pulpit from the 16th century and a late Renaissance pulpit from the 17th century are worth seeing. https://www.tourismus.kahla.de/w/stadtkirche-st-margarethen

+++New Opening Hours from August 1, 2025+++ The sculpture garden in Plinz was created by the artist Jochen Bach starting in the mid-1990s. He moved to Plinz in 1972 with his wife Gisa, both young architects at the time, and transformed it into a very special place. He exhibited and sold his paintings in the former mill. Sadly, he passed away at the end of 2022 after a full and fulfilling life of 80. I, his daughter, have now returned home and continue to run the gallery, selling and exhibiting his paintings as well as my own. We maintain and preserve the sculpture garden using private funds and would like to continue sharing it with people who come to Plinz seeking peace and inspiration. Since this is quite a time-consuming undertaking, we will be limiting access to two days a week starting August 1, 2025: Saturday & Sunday 🪴 Garden open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 🖼 Gallery open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Outside these hours, visits are only possible by prior arrangement. The town church, with its distinctive 66-meter tower, dominates the townscape. The church's namesake is also the town's patron saint. Formerly a castle, the old town and the church now stand on a roughly 700-meter-long sandstone plateau that rises approximately 25 meters above the Saale River.

The church, which stands outside the historic center, is estimated to have been built in the 13th century. The original frescoes on the northern interior wall of the church also support this age. The wall paintings and the preserved support beams only extend to the middle of the nave and convey an impression of the church's original size.

A beautiful route along the Orla River and train platforms. 😁 Especially not very busy, which surprised me, but oh well 🤷. All the more peaceful for cycling 🚴♀️.

It's nice to see that nature has regained a strip of land. Even though one building is missing, the place is pretty lost.

Right next to the cycle path is the confluence of the Orla and Saale. There is a small hut with a table and two benches with space for about 6-8 cyclists (or hikers).

If you don't feel like pedalling up the hill in Niederkrossen, this is a nice flat alternative, and when the water is high you also get a free bike and foot wash
