After a roughly 7km hike from the parking lot by the bridge, you reach the entrance to the actual gorge. There's a €6 entrance fee, and you'll receive instructions in English on how to behave in the gorge. The gorge itself is marked with green arrows and dots at the beginning. This is followed by a short yellow section. The beginning of the red markings is reserved for experts, and it's not recommended to walk on this section. Visitors are also advised to remain quiet in the gorge and not to leave any litter behind.

That Sardinia's highest mountain is crowned by an imposing summit cross may not be a given, but it certainly seems natural to the mountain hiker. A base made of natural stone from the surrounding area forms the lower level of this small sacred monument. A round column bears the Latin inscription "Ave Crux spes unica" (loosely translated, "Hail, [Holy] Cross, [our] only hope") and, further up, merges almost seamlessly into the cross's longitudinal beam. Like many other summit crosses, it is comparatively simple in its design and lacks a corpus, but it is certainly dignified.

The path from the upper parking lot has its own magic. You hike through ancient forests, past mighty, gnarled giant trees that look as if they had watched the Nuragic people stack stones. Magnificent views open up again and again down into the valley below – and the dramatic rock formations all around look like the stage set for a fantasy epic.
