La parola Sequoia deriva dalla lingua Cherokee.
Sequoyah (1770 -1843) fu infatti un orafo Cherokee inventore del sillabario della sua lingua. Il nome è stato scelto per nominare questo albero dal botanico austriaco Stephan Ladislaus Endlicher.
